How to Get Your Parents to Stop Controlling You

momSome parents often won't stop controlling their children. Young adults and even older adults have this problem. Parents who are controlling usually don't stop even after you move out of their house and into your own apartment. What can we do about it? The first step is to move out of your parents house as soon as possible.
Move Out Of Your Parents House

Make sure to save enough money so you can move into your own apartment as soon as possible. It is the first step of being an adult. Adults pay the rent, buy the food, pay the power bill and somehow make it through the money struggles every once in a while. It is part of the growing up process.

Limit Visits

Don't let your parents come over to visit you as much. Don't feel obligated to open the door each time they come over to your apartment without asking you first. They need to understand that you are a busy person. You need to learn to say no to things that you are uncomfortable about. Don't let your parents push you around. Adults have a right to make own decisions. Adults don't have to answer to parents anymore. Make sure not to give them a key to your apartment!

Don't answer your phone as much

When your parents call you then don't answer your phone as much. Don't be available to them each time they call you. If they get mad because you don't answer your phone then keep on letting them talk to the answering machine. They will get the point that you refuse to be available to them all the time. They will eventually understand.

Don't borrow money from them

This is one of the most important is to not borrow money from them. Adults can take care of themselves without having to borrow money from mom and dad all the time. Parents often use money as control and don't let them use money as a weapon. They often think that since they give you money then they have a right to control you. Money isn't important enough to let someone control you with it. If you need to borrow money then make sure to ask friends first.

Don't let them pay for your college

Parents that pay for your college often think that they can control you. They often think you aren't able to take care of yourself. You can get student loans to go to college. If you let them pay for your college then you will never hear the end about how much money they spent. Don't let them decide what college degree you are going to get. Your college degree is only your decision.

Don't let them interfere with your relationships

Don't let parents interfere with your relationship with your boyfriend or girlfriend. They won't have that much control in your life unless you let them. What happens in your romance relationships is between you and your partner. It has nothing to do with your parents so they don't have a right to know.
