How to Find 200 Link Building Targets Using Competitor Backlink Analysis
Competitor backlink analysis is the fastest way to build a qualified list of directory and listing targets. Here’s the exact process for finding 200 platforms your competitors use that you’re not on yet.
## The Core Methodology
Your competitors have already done the research. Every directory they’re listed on is a validated link building opportunity — the site accepts listings in your niche, the process works, and the link exists. Your job is to find those platforms and replicate the presence.
## Step 1 — Select Your Targets
Choose 3-5 competitors with stronger domain authority than yours. Ideal competitors are direct, similar-sized businesses in your exact niche — not industry giants with thousands of backlinks.
## Step 2 — Export Backlink Profiles
Run each competitor through Ahrefs or Semrush. Export their full backlink profile. Filter for: link type = “dofollow”, domain type = “new domains,” and exclude backlinks from their own properties and social media platforms.
## Step 3 — Filter for Directories
From the exported list, filter for directories by looking at URL patterns (/directory/, /listing/, /submit/) and source domains that contain words like “directory,” “listing,” “find,” “review.” You’ll typically find 50-150 qualifying platforms per competitor.
## Step 4 — Deduplicate and Prioritize
Combine all competitor lists and remove duplicates. Sort by domain authority descending. Your top 100 by DA become your priority campaign targets. The remaining 100 form your secondary list.
